prayer

A five-page comic in black and white. First page: the first panel shows a lake set against the backdrop of a forest and some mountains in the background. The lake's water is dark, as is the forest. The second panel shows Clairikine, a thin white person with short blonde hair, wearing a flannel shirt over a black T-shirt, jeans and black Chuck Taylors, walking out of the woods towards the lake shore, a curious look on their face. The woods they're walking through are strewn with pine needles, stumps, bushes, rocks, broken branches and other vegetation. Third panel: Clairikine is seen from the side, standing at the edge of the woods next to a tall pine tree, their hands in their pockets, frowning. Handwritten text next to them says "Since I left home," and ends at the comma. Fourth panel: same view of Clairikine as they walk down the hill towards the lake, still frowning.
Second page: in the first panel, we see Clairikine's Chucks from behind as they step into the water. Text in white letters on black water says "you show me who i am, even if no one else believes that." Second panel: Clairikine is standing waist deep in the water, their hands hanging down at their sides. They stare down at the water, still frowning. Text to the right of the panel says "i don't need you to make sense of the world." Third panel: Clairikine as seen from the side, now standing with the water up to their chest, staring ahead and frowning still. Text at the top of the panel says "i need you so i don't drown in it" Fourth panel: Clairikine is now in up to their nose, still frowning, to the right of the panel. Text above them in the middle of the panel says "or drown in myself." Fifth panel: Clairikine has disappeared, and all we see is some water splashing up as they've gone under.
Third page: The entire page is one giant background panel of the dark lake water framed at the top with the shore and forest, and at the bottom with treetops. One large panel in the top two-thirds to the left of the page shows the white silhouette of Clairikine as they float in the dark water. Text to the bottom right says "you've pulled me out from under, and i know you'll do it again" To the bottom right of the page, a rectangular panel shows movement in the dark water, with a pontoon on the right side of the panel.

Fourth page: Two large rectangular panels over an entirely black background. The first one shows a closer view of the pontoon. Text to the top left of the panel says "and i never asked to consider myself before" The second panel is the same, except that we see Clairikine's hand jutting out from the water, reaching for the pontoon. Text above the pontoon says "but i'm asking you to help me now"

Fifth page: The entire page is one background panel showing an overhead view of the lake, with the forest and mountains at the top of the panel and tree tops below, and three panels set against it at the top half of the page. The first panel at the top shows Clairikine pulling themself up onto the pontoon out of the water, drops splashing everywhere. There is a stack of towels on the pontoon to the right of the panel. Text above Clairikine says "it's not for nothing that i want" Second panel: Clairikine still dripping, wet hair, wiping their face with one of the towels. Text next to them says "i need to feel what's true" Third panel is wide, with Clairikine a little left of the center of the panel, still dripping a little, holding the towel, and looking up, an eyebrow raised, otherwise mostly expressionless, maybe with some expectation. The second half of the page shows the lake and the pontoon Clairikine is standing on as seen from above, and to the right we see that at the end of the pontoon is a house on the lake, with windows on the side and one in the roof, and a chimney with smoke coming out of it. There appears to be light on inside. Text to the left of the pontoon, in white letters over the dark water, says "and know that i'll want for nothing".

I wrote this on my phone around a year ago and drew it sometime between then and late last year. If you like it, you might also like my 2022 comic Boxes!
